RELEASE: Rep. Cloud Applauds Vistra’s Investment in Goliad County to Enhance Texas Power Grid
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Michael Cloud (TX-27) applauded Vistra’s decision to invest in Goliad County, announcing plans to enhance Texas’ power grid by repowering the Coleto Creek Power Plant in Goliad County as a gas-fueled plant.
Vistra plans to enhance Texas’ power grid by adding 2GW of natural-gas-fired dispatchable capacity, including constructing advanced simple-cycle peakers in West Texas and transitioning the Coleto Creek power plant from coal to natural gas, to produce up to 600 megawatts of additional capacity for consumers.
Upon learning about the potential closure of the power plant, Congressman Cloud and his team quickly mobilized to find a solution. They engaged directly with Vistra and key state officials such as LT. Gov. Dan Patrick, emphasizing the plant’s importance to the Texas power grid and local economy. It was a priority of Congressman Cloud to make sure that Goliad County’s concerns were heard by high-ranking Texas officials to best explore the options available for the community.
Rep. Cloud released the following statement:
“I am thrilled that Vistra has committed to the community in Southeast Texas and look forward to the successful implementation of these projects, which will benefit not only Goliad County but the entire state. This initiative capitalizes on Texas’ abundant gas supply and will provide more energy capacity, support local economic growth, and strengthen America’s energy leadership.
I want to thank the local officials, Vistra, and all those involved in this effort. Together, we are making significant strides toward ensuring that Southeast Texas remains a cornerstone of economic prosperity and energy security for Texas and the nation.”
