RELEASE: President Signs Cloud Bill to Rename Corpus Christi Post Office After Local WWII Hero, Captain Robert E. ‘Bob’ Batterson
WASHINGTON — Congressman Michael Cloud (TX-27) announced that his bill to name the U.S. post office in downtown Corpus Christi as the Captain Robert E. ‘Bob’ Batterson Post Office has been signed into law.
Captain Batterson, a U.S. Navy veteran, enlisted in 1939 and dedicated 35 years to serving his nation. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941 attack and later earned his wings at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, where he began his career as a Navy Aviator flying F6F Hellcats in defense of the United States during World War II. After the war, Capt. Batterson continued his service in the Navy’s Supply Corps until his retirement in 1974.
In retirement, Capt. Batterson remained a pillar of the Coastal Bend community, volunteering for 26 years at the U.S.S. Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi. He became a beloved figure at the Pearl Harbor exhibit, sharing his experiences and preserving the history of those who served. His dedication to honoring the sacrifices of his fellow servicemembers inspired countless visitors and left a lasting legacy. Capt. Batterson passed away in 2023 at the age of 102, leaving behind a profound example of service to both his country and his community.
Rep. Cloud released the following statement:
“Captain Robert E. ‘Bob’ Batterson embodied the very best of what it means to be an American hero. His life was a testament to courage, service, and dedication—not just in uniform but also in his tireless efforts to honor and preserve the history of those who served alongside him. With this post office now bearing his name, generations of Texans and visitors alike will walk through its doors and be reminded of his remarkable legacy.”
