Congressman Cloud Leads Bicameral Resolution to Rescind Illegal VA Abortion Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Michael Cloud (TX-27), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Mike Bost (IL-12), and Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) partnered with Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to introduce a bicameral Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to rescind the VA’s rule that provides abortion services through the taxpayer-funded VA healthcare system.

The VA seems to have issued this rule in apparent response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which rightfully overturned the misguided Roe v. Wade decision and returned the issue of abortion to the American people to decide through their state legislatures.

Moreover, the VA is knowingly violating current law as Section 106 of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992 explicitly prohibits the VA from providing abortion services.

No American should be forced by our government to pay for someone else’s abortion,” Congressman Cloud said. “The Biden administration is abusing its authority and ignoring the law to enforce a radical anti-life agenda. The VA should remain committed to providing care to support the lives of our veterans, not be used as a political tool by the Biden administration to illegally provide taxpayer-funded abortions.”

“It’s shameful to see the Biden administration continue to find ways to blatantly undermine our laws,” Senator Tuberville said. “The interim final rule from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide taxpayer-funded abortions at its facilities is the latest subversion in a long line of actions from this administration that points to complete contempt for the law. It betrays the convictions of many Americans who value the sanctity of life and don’t want their tax dollars paying for abortions. I am proud to join my colleagues in voicing opposition to this rule and holding the Biden administration accountable.”

“Generations of servicemembers and veterans have fought and died to protect the right to life. I firmly believe that abortion is wrong, and Congress prohibited VA from providing it decades ago,” said Ranking Member Bost. “The Biden administration’s recent move to disregard the law and offer abortion services at VA continues to be illegal. Notwithstanding the fact that this ruling goes beyond the Hyde Amendment protections that the rest of the federal government follow. In just 22 days, House Republicans will hold the Biden administration accountable for their illegal actions and fight for the lives of the unborn.”

“As a veteran, I’m outraged by the VA’s severely misguided decision to illegally authorize abortion services — directing valuable, taxpayer-funded resources away from assisting our nation’s veterans and toward ending innocent unborn lives,” Congressman Clyde said. “I’m proud to work with my colleagues to repeal the Biden Administration’s unconstitutional and unlawful rule, and I remain committed to protecting the sanctity of life against the Left’s radical abortion agenda.”
