Today Congressman Michael Cloud (TX-27) introduced a bill to direct the United States Postal Service (USPS) to designate 77416 as the single, unique ZIP code for Sargent, Texas, and for other purposes.
The town of Sargent, TX has long been wanting its own unique and single zip code.

The residents of the Sargent community have been lumped in with Bay City’s zip code, almost 25 miles away. On top of an ever-increasing inefficient mail system, this problem has been causing, the needs of a community 25 miles away are simply not the same as the Sargent community needs.

This legislation was needed because Congressman Cloud has been working with community leaders in Sargent and in Matagorda County who have petitioned the USPS several times on the importance of Sargent having their own zip code, only to have their requests denied.  The USPS denied their request saying that the “Houston District determined that a Zip Code change would not be feasible.” However, the USPS fails to comment on the merits as to why Sargent would not qualify, except to say that, “The sole purpose is for the efficient processing and distribution of the mail.”

This bill culminates over a year’s worth of work on the efforts to establish Sargent’s zip code and has the backing of several community and county leaders in the area, including:

  • Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald
  • Matagorda County Commissioner for Precinct 2 Kent Pollard
  • Constable Bill Orton – Matagorda Country Precinct 6
  • Karen Klein – Treasurer of the Sargent Beach Property Owners Association

The people of Sargent would benefit from having their own zip code and Congressman Cloud will look for opportunities to advance this legislation and see this effort through to completion.
The bill stipulates that the United States Postal Service shall designate 77416 as the single, unique ZIP Code applicable to Sargent, Texas, no later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act.
