WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Michael Cloud (R-TX) applauded the House’s passage of Congressman Chip Roy’s (R-TX) Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, strengthening election integrity by requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

The SAVE Act amends the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) to mandate that states obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity when individuals register to vote in federal elections. This requirement applies to all registration methods, including those at the DMV, voter registration agencies, or by mail.

The bill also allows citizens to bring civil lawsuits against election officials who fail to uphold proof of citizenship requirements and imposes penalties on officials who register non-citizens to vote in our elections. The Election Assistance Commission is directed to update relevant guidance and streamline federal forms to reflect these new requirements.

According to the Pew Research Center, 81% of Americans support ID verification for voting. The SAVE Act responds to this overwhelming public demand by implementing common-sense measures to protect our elections.

Rep. Cloud released the following statement:

“The basic idea that only American citizens should vote in American elections is something that an overwhelming majority of Americans already support. The American people deserve to have confidence in the integrity of their elections, and it is imperative that we uphold the rule of law and ensure that every vote cast is a legal one.

Unsurprisingly, DC Democrats have adamantly opposed this bill, showcasing their ongoing efforts to dismantle voter ID laws, promote open borders, and undermine the will of American citizens. Their resistance to such basic election integrity measures is alarming and tells you everything you need to know about their priorities and the support for their policies.

I was honored to be an original co-sponsor of this legislation and commend my colleague, Congressman Roy, for his leadership on this important issue.”
